«Philosopher» of Rodin
The «Philosopher», created by French sculptor Rodin, by right takes place of one of the most recognizable sculptures in the modern world.
Recently the sculpture set up the new auction records: in Paris at the auction, organized by auction house Drouot, the «Philosopher» was sold more than 3 million Euros (about 4,2 million dollars).
Reduced copy of the original «Philosopher», whose height is only 72 cm, is a part of series of 21 sculptures, which was once created by Roden. Initially the statue had to be the composition of «Gates of Hell», created by Roden after «Divine Comedy» of Dante. His first small plaster statue Rodin created in 1880, and the bronzes «Philosopher» of original size he introduced to audience two decades later, in 1904.
The «Philosopher», sold at Drouot auction in 1917, was purchased by a French collector Emile Shuanar.
